{"id":99,"date":"2014-09-24T18:33:49","date_gmt":"2014-09-24T18:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/campus-safety\/?page_id=99"},"modified":"2025-08-06T14:41:59","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T14:41:59","slug":"protecting-your-vehicle","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/campus-safety\/parking-management\/protecting-your-vehicle\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Parking Considerations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Special Parking Considerations<\/h1>\n<p>Throughout the academic year, Campus Safety may request permitholders to move their vehicle to accommodate a MMA event, parking lot maintenance or campus construction.\u00a0 While we strive to inconvenience you as little as possible, we ask for your patience and understanding during these events.\u00a0 Campus Safety will send a campus-wide e-mail through your email account several days prior to the event that lists the date(s) and time(s) of the parking lot closure.\u00a0 Students who fail to remove their vehicle will be ticketed and may have their vehicle towed at the owner\u2019s risk and expense.<\/p>\n<h2>Golf Course Parking Lot<\/h2>\n<p>The Castine Golf Course is available to <strong>students with a valid Commuter parking permit displayed<em>. <\/em><\/strong>It is available for commuter students to use from <strong>October through May<\/strong>. Spaces marked for Golf Course Staff are not to be used by students. Overnight parking is not allowed in the Golf Course. All parking rules apply to the Golf Course.\u00a0 Failure to follow the parking rules may result in a citation, immobilization or towing.<\/p>\n<h2>Watchstander Parking<\/h2>\n<p>There is \u201cWatchstander Parking\u201d located behind Dirigo House near the Waterfront and two (2) spaces in front of Andrews Hall.\u00a0 Only MMA students who are assigned watch aboard the TSSOM are allowed to park in these spots. \u00a0These spots are available from 1900-0800 M-F, and 1600 Friday to 0800 Monday for weekend watches. \u00a0All other times these spaces will be designated as faculty\/staff parking. Any vehicle found parked in these spaces that is not registered to an on duty watchstander will be subject to a parking citation.<\/p>\n<h2>Snow Removal and Parking Bans<\/h2>\n<p>During the winter months it may be necessary to empty a campus parking lot to accommodate for snow removal.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0If the snow removal must occur when classes are in session Campus Safety will work the Facilities Department to coordinate this effort.\u00a0 The MMA campus community will receive an e-mail from Campus Safety with details pertaining to the snow removal and instructions for the permit holder.\u00a0 Students\/Employees who fail to remove their vehicle may have their vehicle towed at the owner\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n<p>There are five parking spaces designated as \u201cSNOW BAN\u201d parking in the Commuter Student parking lot at Athletics. These spaces are marked with signs. With the intent to assist students who live off campus in the town of Castine and who need a place to park during town parking bans, vehicles with properly displayed, valid Commuter Parking permits may park in one of these five spaces overnight when a Town of Castine parking ban is in effect. This accommodation is only available when the Town of Castine sends an alert that a parking ban is in effect, and only for the duration of the ban. All vehicles must leave these spots immediately when the ban is over, so that the spaces can be plowed, sanded or otherwise maintained. Vehicles left in those spots beyond the ban will be subject to parking citations, immobilization or towing. Once these five spots are full, there are no other spots on campus for a Commuter vehicle to be parked overnight. When no Town of Castine parking ban is in effect, these spots are to be used as usual Commuter spaces.<\/p>\n<h2>City Streets<\/h2>\n<p>Maine Maritime Academy may assist the Town of Castine in enforcing parking regulations on the streets that border or encompass the campus.\u00a0 These areas are also regulated and enforced by the Town of Castine.\u00a0 Many areas are restricted by the day of the week (calendar parking) or the time of year (seasonal parking).\u00a0 Please visit the Town of Castine parking rules at <a href=\"https:\/\/castine.me.us\/ordinances-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/castine.me.us\/ordinances-policies\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Loading\/Unloading<\/h2>\n<p>The academy recognizes that members of the campus community may need access to load and unload items. In order to accommodate this need, you may use the closest available parking space as long as you have your flashers on and do not leave your vehicle for more than 15 minutes.\u00a0 Fire lanes, sidewalks or handicap accessible parking spaces may not be used for this purpose.\u00a0 Once finished loading or unloading your vehicle please return your vehicle to the appropriate parking location for your parking permit.\u00a0 If the need to load or unload a vehicle will extend beyond 15 minutes, please contact Campus Safety.<\/p>\n<h2>Prohibited Vehicles &amp; Trailers<\/h2>\n<p>Vehicles that extend beyond the boundaries of a designated parking stall are not permitted to park on campus or the Waterfront.\u00a0 Oversized vehicles may park at the Penobscot Lot with the permission of Campus Safety.\u00a0 Trailers, campers or motorhomes are not permitted on campus during the academic year without permission from Campus Safety.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicles parked on Maine Maritime Academy property must be operable at all times. Vehicles that are emitting fluids or any other types of material that may create a hazardous condition or damage the parking lot surface are restricted from parking on MMA property.\u00a0 An attempt will be made to contact the owner of any vehicle found in this condition.\u00a0 If the owner of a vehicle is not able to be contacted, the vehicle may be towed from Maine Maritime Academy property at the owner\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n<h2>Protecting Your Vehicle<\/h2>\n<p>Campus Safety Officers routinely patrol the Maine Maritime Academy parking lots looking for suspicious activities and parking violations.\u00a0 Although our presence may deter criminal activity, we cannot be present 24 hours a day.\u00a0 Campus Safety asks for your help in taking some simple steps to protect your vehicle.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always lock your vehicle and roll up the windows<\/li>\n<li>Do not leave your keys in your vehicle<\/li>\n<li>Never leave your vehicle running unattended<\/li>\n<li>Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
