He spent summers waterskiing on Sebec Lake and winters downhill skiing at Big Moose Mountain with his older siblings, Sudy and Jeff. A southpaw, he excelled at basketball, baseball, and football. He participated in the Olympic trials for ski aerials, but broke his ankle before qualifying.

Mike attended Maine Maritime Academy and regaled others with stories of pranks and foodfights in addition to receiving rigorous training as a marine engineer. Upon graduation, Mike worked as a marine engineer on carrier ships on the Great Lakes. His career as a marine engineer and sailor took him all over the world, including to Tahiti, Baffin Island, France, Turkey, and southern China.

While sailing on the Regina Maris, a 146-foot brigantine ship, in 1976, he met Ann Preston. They soon married and spent the early years of their marriage chartering sailboats in the Caribbean Sea. They lived aboard Denalia, a Danish fishing schooner converted to a houseboat, and Ann gave birth to their two children, Charlotte and Sam, on different Caribbean islands.

Upon being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Mike and his family left the Caribbean and moved to Allston so he could seek treatment from Dana-Farber. He was one of the first people to receive a bone marrow transplant, which was successful and led to remission. Having lived on a boat and in the city, Mike and his family moved to Harvard where they raised chickens and goats and sailed small sailboats on Bare Hill Pond. During this time, Mike founded Taylor Marine Services and advised numerous clients on how to construct large yachts.

Mike will be remembered for his sense of humor, athleticism, love of music, and ingenuity when it came to problem solving. There was no one better to build a treehouse or fix a heating system with outdated parts that can no longer be replaced. He enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play basketball and soccer. He will also be remembered by his grandkids for building contraptions with them in the barn and constructing giant bonfires outdoors and not so giant fires in the fireplace. For the past seven summers, the Taylor family spent time at Sebec Lake where Mike showed his grandkids all of the haunts of his youth.

Mike maintained his sense of humor and uncomplaining nature until the end. He is survived by his wife, Ann; children Sam (Emily) and Charlotte (Aaron); four grandchildren; sister Sudy, brother Jeff; and numerous cousins. The family will hold a private service at Sebec Lake next summer.

Mike Taylor died peacefully in his home in Harvard Oct. 1, surrounded by his family, with the sounds of the WNBA playoffs in the background.
