RAYMOND — Guy N. Carroll Jr., of Raymond, died on Feb. 23, 2013, at New England Rehabilitation in Portland.<\/p>\n
He was born on March 29, 1934, in Bangor, the son of Guy N. Carroll Sr. and Margaret Hogan Carroll. He graduated from John Bapst High School, Bangor and Maine Maritime Academy, Castine. He was an all-around athlete during his high school and college years and excelled at basketball, his favorite sport.<\/p>\n
Guy retired from active duty with the\u00a0U.S. Navy\u00a0in 1981, his last tour of duty as Commander, Naval Reserve Center, Portland. During his 24 years of naval service, his most memorable tour of duty was aboard the U.S. Navy Icebreaker Burton Island, homeported in Seattle, Wash. While serving aboard as Chief Engineer, he participated in scientific expeditions to both Antarctica and the Arctic during the early 1960’s. He recalled ‘it was like venturing to another world, a place where very few people get to go.’ He also served with the Navy as an instructor at Maine Maritime Academy, Castine. Other tours of duty included sea tours aboard the ships U.S.S. Pocono, U.S.S. Austin and U.S.S. Caloosahatchee plus other shore commands.<\/p>\n
After retirement from active duty, he became an instructor in the Marine Science department at Southern Maine Technical College, South Portland. He later left teaching to become Marina Manager and Senior Captain of the 100 passenger cruise boat ‘Princess’ at Point Sebago Resort on Sebago Lake. He would often comment, ‘where else could one work and enjoy the great outdoors of Maine.’ During his 25 plus years as Marina Manager at Point Sebago, he was instrumental in guiding and motivating many young staff members in their search to become strong, successful leaders of the future.<\/p>\n
Guy was also a self taught musician, playing both the piano and accordion. His favorite time of year was Saint Patrick’s Day when he would join many of his\u00a0special friends and celebrate the rising of the green. He was well known for his Irish sing-a-longs and get-togethers on Sebago Lake.<\/p>\n
Guy enjoyed traveling with his wife, Nancy, his favorite destinations being Ireland, Scotland and the Pacific Northwest. He was an active golfer, boater and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and his buddies ‘Chief Jay and Uncle Wayne.’ \u00a0He also vacationed several months each winter at Melbourne Beach, Fla., where he enjoyed playing golf with many of his old cronies from the past.<\/p>\n
Guy was a life-long member of the Portland Marine Society, Maine Maritime Alumni, The Penobscot Salmon Club plus many other organizations during his lifetime.<\/p>\n
Surviving are his wife Nancy Carroll; three sons, Guy Carroll 3rd, Blaine Carroll and Casey Carroll; one step-son, Mark Smith, three step-daughters, Ann Nakamura, Cathy Willey and Diana Grimes; plus several grandchildren; nephews and nieces.<\/p>\n
Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham.
