Robert E. Walsh ’60

HARPSWELL – Ret. Lt. of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department Robert E. Walsh, 72, of Mountain Road, died Thursday, July 26, 2012 at his home. He was born Sept. 19, 1939 in Bronx, N.Y., the son of Michael and Grace Sauer Walsh.

He graduated from Smithtown High School, Smithtown, N.Y. in 1957 and from the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME in 1960. He was given a commission in the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1960 and was honorably discharged in 1972. On May 26, 1962 he married Marianne Marks. In 1979 Bob graduated from the 34th class of The Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Waterville.
Throughout his career, Bob held various police ranks including Deputy Sheriff in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, Riverhead, N.Y., Special Agent in the Office of Naval Intelligence in New York, N.Y., Detective in the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, and Police Chief of Vinalhaven, ME. His most recent employment was with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department for over 20 years, from which he retired as a lieutenant on March 17, 2006.

Bob was a very active member in all of the communities in which he lived. He was a volunteerfirefighter for the Smithtown, N.Y. Volunteer Fire Dept. where he established the department’s first rescue company. In Maine, he was a volunteer for the Harpswell Neck Volunteer Fire Department and was a substitute teacher for the past three years at Mount Ararat High School in Topsham.
Bob enjoyed model railroading, smoking cigars, and spending time with family and friends. He was also fond of camping and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marianne Walsh of Harpswell; two sons, Michael T. Walsh, his wife Lindi and their sons Alan and Robbie of Brunswick, Sean P. Walsh, his wife Lisa of Great Falls, Mont. and Sean’s sons Alec and Austin of Florida; a brother, Richard Walsh and his wife Sandra of Winchester, Va.; as well as their son Brian, also of Virginia.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, August 1st from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 2nd at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church-All Saints Parish, 132 McKeen St. Brunswick.
