Please email us for information or to schedule an appointment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The FAFSA Simplification Act<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FAFSA Simplification Act went into effect on July 1, 2023, introducing several important changes aimed at making the federal student aid process easier and more accessible for students and families. Key updates include the introduction of the Student Aid Index (SAI), which replaces the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), and changes to how parental income is reported, particularly for students with separated or divorced parents. Additionally, the new system no longer considers the number of siblings in college when determining eligibility for need-based aid. Parents without a Social Security Number (SSN) will also be able to create an FSA ID to expedite the FAFSA submission process. These changes are aimed at streamlining the application process, making it more straightforward and equitable for all applicants.<\/p>\n<p>At Maine Maritime Academy, the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAFSA<\/a> (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) plays a vital role in helping students access the financial support they need to pursue their education. The program provides financial support to Midshipmen enrolled in the Strategic Sealift Midshipmen Program (SSMP) at Maine Maritime Academy who will graduate as a licensed officer in the U.S Merchant Marine.\r\n\r\nThe U.S. Merchant Marine provides the primary sealift capability necessary to meet national defense requirements. To support these requirements, the Department of the Navy established the SSMP. The SSMP produces Navy officers who hold a U.S. merchant mariner\u2019s license and are subject matter experts in sealift, maritime operations, and logistics. This unique skillset allows our graduates to fulfill many of the Navy\u2019s combat support missions.\r\n\r\nTo further support defense requirements, incentives are available to SSMP Midshipmen through SIP. Enrolled Midshipmen can receive up to $32,000; these funds must be used to offset the cost of tuition, room and board, uniforms, books.\r\n\r\nPlease note that SIP requires a separate application.
