Next Steps for Parents and Families

You can access the FAFSA online after October 1. The priority filing deadline for Maine Maritime Academy is February 1st, but students can still send in their FAFSA after this date. Students begin to receive their aid award notifications towards the end of January. You can find more information at the Financial Aid website. Please note: International students do not need to provide a FAFSA and are not eligible for federal student aid

Whether your student is still considering attending Maine Maritime Academy or if they have accepted our offer of admission, we encourage you to attend the April Open House which includes an accepted student break-out session. This session provides important information for parents and families. If you can’t come to the Open House, you can come to campus with your student while they spend the day or night attending classes and shadowing a current student – after the morning presentation and tour, you can explore Castine and/or the many attractions in the area!
If your student chooses to attend, we request that they accept their offer by May 1st. If you student does not plan to attend Maine Maritime Academy, please have them decline the offer of admission – but we hope your student chooses to attend!
When your student accepts their offer of admission, an enrollment deposit of $250 must be submitted. The deposit can be conveniently paid online.
All incoming students, regardless of major, are required to submit proof of immunizations as well as completing the medical evaluation and physical examination forms. The forms can be accessed as form fill documents on your student’s Admissions portal, their MyMMA portal, or they can be accessed on our website. These forms must be submitted to the Admissions Office prior your student’s arrival on-campus in August. Ideally, these forms should be submitted in June prior to your student attending New Student Orientation (NSO) but the forms can submitted in person at NSO as well.
Students are requested to send a certified copy of their birth certificate as well as a photo copy of their Social Security card to Admissions prior to their arrival in August. Students majoring in a license program are required to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential—TWIC. Students who visit campus after depositing can schedule an appointment to apply for their TWIC at MMA. Likewise, students in a license program will need to have a valid passport. We encourage your student to have a passport prior to arriving in August
Your student is required to attend New Student Orientation (NSO), however, we encourage you to attend as well! There are sessions specifically for parents and families focusing on financial aid, billing, the Regiment of Midshipmen, etc., and a casual social where you can meet other parents and families. Registration for NSO will begin April 1st via your students’s MyMMA portal and sessions will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. On-campus housing will be provided for all students during their NSO session while parents and families can stay on-campus, in Castine, or the surrounding area. Rooms on campus can be reserved on a first come, first served basis by contacting Conferences and Events. There are three inns in Castine and multiple hotel/motel options in the surrounding area as well as two campgrounds. During NSO you student may register for uniform fittings in the Bookstore as well as apply for their TWIC through the Registrar’s Office.
Your student’s your first college bill should be available online in mid-July or your student will be able to access the information on their MyMMA portal. Your student’s bill must be paid or arrangements made the day before your arrival to campus, but no later than August 15th.
The Academy has an agreement with Tuition Management Systems (TMS) which offers a monthly payment plan. Tuition Management Systems offers a 10-month plan with equal payments due July 1 – April 1. This plan can be used to cover all MMA costs or to supplement final costs after financial aid. Tuition Management Systems offers a 10-month plan in coordination with loans as well, for those who want to lower their monthly payments. Information is sent directly to entering first year students from TMS, or contact the Finance Office at (207-326-2243) for details. The TMS website is for those who would like to sign up on line.
We encourage all parents and family members to join the Parents Association, or at least follow their Facebook page! You can ask questions, get advice, receive important information concerning your student throughout the year, and get involved in the many events on and off-campus through the Parents Association. This community is specifically for you and can be informative as well as supportive – they were first-time MMA parents once, just like you!
Maine Maritime Academy will have several different arrival dates and times in mid-August depending on your student’s major and if they are participating in a fall athletics program. Your student can find out their report date through their MyMMA portal or the Academic Calendar. If you or your student has any questions please contact the Department of Residential Life.
