CASTINE, Maine\u2014Dr. William J. Brennan, President of Maine Maritime Academy, announced today that the college will receive $3.4 million in gifts from the Harold Alfond Foundation to support two major initiatives at the college. The Foundation will give $1 million toward the construction of the ABS Center for Engineering, Science, and Research, and $2.4 million for the establishment of the Harold Alfond Engineering Scholarship for engineering students.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to support students pursuing an engineering degree who may not otherwise be able to afford an MMA education,\u201d said Gregory Powell, chairman of the Harold Alfond Foundation. \u201cWe are also investing in infrastructure that will support engineering instruction and research that will enrich the student experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFinances are one of the major obstacles to a college education,\u201d said MMA President William J. Brennan. \u201cWith the support of the Harold Alfond Foundation, we can directly affect positive outcomes for students who want to pursue a Maine Maritime Academy engineering degree.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maine Maritime Academy will name its engineering program the Harold Alfond School of Engineering to acknowledge the continued dedication and support of the Harold Alfond Foundation to the college and its students.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1950, the Harold Alfond Foundation furthers the philanthropic legacy of Harold Alfond, the founder of Dexter Shoe Company and a longtime supporter of Maine communities in which he and his family worked and resided. Harold Alfond awarded matching challenge grants to organizations to build community partnerships and to inspire and leverage additional giving by others. He ensured that his philanthropy would live on by committing nearly all of his wealth to the Foundation, which continues to support charitable causes in the State of Maine. Maine Maritime Academy is a co-educational, public college on the coast of Maine offering 18 degree programs in engineering, management, science, and transportation.
