Davis Vessels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CASTINE, Maine\u2014July 21, 2014\u2014Maine Maritime Academy\u2019s schooner <em>Bowdoin<\/em>, a National Historic Landmark and the Official Vessel of the State of Maine, will participate in an open-to-the-public gathering of vessels designed by William Hand Jr. and R.O. Davis this Saturday, July 26<sup>th<\/sup> from 3-6 pm.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Guildive Cruises in Castine, Maine, is hosting the gathering of yacht designer-built vessels, featuring the work of William Hand Jr. and R.O. Davis. \u00a0The gathering is also a celebration of Guildive\u2019s 80 years afloat. William Hand Jr. is known as one of the most prolific yacht designers of the 20th century, and in combination with R.O. Davis they pioneered many vessel designs that are still prevalent today. \u00a0The public is invited to explore the decks of 4 famous designs, meet the owners and past friends of the vessels. \u00a0All boats will be open on Saturday, July 26th from 3-6 pm free of charge. \u00a0The vessels will be docked at the Maine Maritime Academy, the Castine Public Docks, and Dennett\u2019s Wharf Restaurant. \u00a0The attending vessels will be the Bowdoin, Guildive, Burma, and Tracker. All four vessels were constructed between the years of 1921 &#8211; 1950.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Bowdoin<\/em> enjoys a long history of seafaring education and Arctic exploration. Commissioned by explorer Donald B. MacMillan to facilitate his work in the high northern latitudes, <em>Bowdoin<\/em> has made 21 trips above the Arctic Circle, 18 of them before 1954 under the command of MacMillan. MacMillan sold<em>Bowdoin<\/em> to the U.S. Navy for use in World War II during the Greenland Patrol. After WWII, MacMillan bought the ship back for $3,000 and continued to sail her for nine more years around Greenland. After MacMillan\u2019s retirement the boat belonged to the Schooner Bowdoin Association until 1988 when Maine Maritime Academy purchased the vessel for the purpose of training students. The public can follow the adventures of the schooner <em>Bowdoin <\/em>on facebook at Arctic Schooner Bowdoin.<\/p>\n<p>Maine Maritime Academy is a co-educational, public college on the coast of Maine offering 18 degree programs in engineering, management, science and transportation. The college is consistently ranked by US News and World Report as one of the top undergraduate engineering schools in the nation. MMA graduates benefit from hands-on instruction, international sea-time aboard the Training Ship <em>State of Maine <\/em>and Schooner<em> Bowdoin, <\/em>cadet shipping aboard commercial vessels, and cooperative education assignments.
