Foremost Group Founder and Chairman Recognized for Lifetime of Leadership in Maritime Commerce, Education, and Philanthropy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

NEW YORK, N.Y. \u2014 Maine Maritime Academy has conferred an Honorary Doctorate upon Dr. James S. C. Chao, Founder and Chairman of Foremost Group, during a special ceremony at Foremost Group\u2019s headquarters in Manhattan.<\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0Chao is recognized for a lifetime of achievement in maritime transportation, business leadership, education, philanthropy, and public service. The ceremony celebrates a remarkable career that has shaped the global shipping industry and inspired generations of maritime professionals around the world.<\/p>\n

“Dr. Chao’s remarkable journey from a young mariner to one of the world’s most respected leaders in international shipping reflects the values of excellence, perseverance, innovation, and service that define Maine Maritime Academy,” said Admiral Craig C. Johnson, President of Maine Maritime Academy. “His commitment to advancing maritime commerce while investing in future generations through education and philanthropy makes him uniquely deserving of this honor.”<\/p>\n

\"Dr.\u00a0Chao“Few individuals have contributed more to the advancement of the maritime profession while simultaneously creating opportunities for others through education and charitable giving. Dr. Chao’s leadership, integrity, and vision have inspired generations of mariners, entrepreneurs, and public servants. We are honored to recognize his extraordinary achievements with this honorary degree.”<\/p>\n

In a statement entered into the Congressional Record, U. S. Senator Susan Collins praised Dr.\u00a0Chao\u2019s \u201clifelong commitment to maritime commerce and leadership development,\u201d noting that his work \u201chas had a lasting impact on the industry and on generations of young professionals.\u201d Senator Collins recounted Dr.\u00a0Chao\u2019s extraordinary journey from a young merchant mariner to an internationally respected shipping executive and philanthropist, concluding: \u201cAmerica is so fortunate to have such an outstanding individual come to our shores and contribute so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Angus King also commended Dr.\u00a0Chao\u2019s extraordinary career and service in a letter marking the occasion. \u201cFrom your record-breaking achievement as a young Master Mariner to your founding of the Foremost Group, you have revolutionized the maritime industry,\u201d Senator King wrote. He further praised Dr.\u00a0Chao\u2019s environmental leadership, noting that \u201cyour commitment to green technology serves as a model for a sustainable future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator King also highlighted Dr.\u00a0Chao\u2019s philanthropic legacy: \u201cYour professional accomplishments are matched only by your generosity. Guided by the same honor and vision that defined your time at sea, you have empowered thousands of students to reach their full potential. Your philanthropic footprint, rooted in the power of education, is truly undeniable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ceremony also celebrates a historic milestone for Maine Maritime Academy. Earlier this year, Dr.\u00a0Chao and his daughter, The Honorable Elaine L. Chao, the 18th<\/sup> U.S. Secretary of Transportation and 24th<\/sup> U.S. Secretary of Labor, were selected to receive honorary doctorates, marking the first father-daughter honorary degree recipients in the Academy\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his life and career, Dr.\u00a0Chao has often credited his success to \u201ccourage, determination, confidence, and trust.\u201d As he once observed: \u201cI could not have had the same success anywhere else as I have in this country. In America, you don\u2019t need to have special \u00a0connections or come from a certain background. All you need is to have a goal and new ideas. After that, all you have to do is work hard and help others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Born into an educated family in a small rural farming community in China, Dr. Chao\u2019s father was a school principal noted for his advocacy of education for rural children.\u00a0 Dr.\u00a0Chao overcame the hardships of numerous wars and displacements to pursue a distinguished maritime career. He advanced rapidly through the ranks to become one of the youngest sea captains at age 29 and achieved the highest score ever recorded on the national Master Mariner Examination. That accomplishment opened the door for further studies in the United States, where he arrived with limited resources and built a new life through determination, hard work, and faith.<\/p>\n

After earning a master\u2019s degree in business administration, Dr.\u00a0Chao founded Foremost Maritime Corporation in 1964, which later expanded into Foremost Group, a global leader in international shipping, trading, and finance. Among his early accomplishments was managing emergency food shipments during the wars in Vietnam and Bangladesh on behalf of U.S. Department of Agriculture and United Nations. Under his leadership, Foremost became an early pioneer in environmentally responsible shipping, continuously upgrading its fleet with energy-saving technologies and building vessels incorporating alternative fuels and carbon-capture capabilities. Today, Foremost\u2019s fleet ranks among the world\u2019s most environmentally advanced bulk carriers.<\/p>\n

For his outstanding contributions to the maritime industry, Dr.\u00a0Chao was inducted into the International Maritime Hall of Fame at the United Nations. \u00a0The recipient of 10 honorary degrees, his many honors include the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Horatio Alger Award of Distinguished Americans, the Outstanding American by Choice Award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Seamen\u2019s Church Institute Silver Bell Award, the Lloyd\u2019s List Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Bureau of Shipping Lifetime Achievement Award and the Coast Guard Foundation honoree of 2025.<\/p>\n

Together with his late wife, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, Dr.\u00a0Chao devoted his life to championing education and philanthropy. Their generosity has supported scholarships and educational opportunities for thousands of students. Among their most notable contributions was the establishment of the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Center<\/strong> at Harvard Business School as part of a landmark $40 million gift that also supports the Ruth Mulan Chu and James Si-Cheng Chao Family Fellowship Fund. The Center was the first building in Harvard University\u2019s history named after both a woman and an Asian Pacific American.<\/p>\n

Through his leadership, innovation, generosity, and unwavering commitment to excellence, Dr.\u00a0James S. C. Chao has left an indelible mark on the maritime industry, higher education, and countless lives around the world.
