Radar Observer Recertification (STCW) 2017 @ Maine Maritime Academy

Radar Recertification is for all deck license holders who are completing their 5-year license renewal.  Homework packets with radar plotting sheets will be mailed to you prior to the class.  Class takes place with the use of the E-Nav Lab simulators.

Regularly scheduled instruction, is usually on the 3rd Saturday of each month.  One on one private instruction or alternate dates available by advance appointment for $375.00 per student.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete our Radar Observer Recertification course will satisfy the training requirements of 46 CFR 11.480(f) for maintaining the validity of an endorsement for Radar Observer.

Qualified Assessor Online @ Maine Maritime Academy

Maine Maritime Academy’s Qualified Assessor course is 100% online. Enrollment is always open.

All assessments must be signed by a qualified assessor approved by the Coast Guard in accordance with 46 CFR 10.405.

This course provides the already qualified seafarer instruction and training in assessment techniques of competency, as well as appropriate guidance in assessment methods and practices. Each participant successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Apply the international and national requirements concerning the training and assessment of officers and ratings on merchant vessels/platforms.
  • Determine and verify effective assessment procedures and methods.
  • Organize and administer, i.e. conduct, assessments to those requiring such.

This USCG approved course meets the training requirements of 46 CFR 10.405(a)(1) and 46 CFR 10.405(d) as well as STCW Code Section A-I/6 paragraphs 3 and 6. This course meets the requirements of the Qualified Assessor fundamentals as outlined as a requirement in USCG NVIC 19-14.

Helicopter Underwater Egress Training, HUET @ Maine Maritime Academy
Oct 2 all-day

This 1-day course is designed for both the swimmer and non-swimmer to practice or learn aquatic emergency response skills and surviving an emergency at sea during travel over or on the water. 

Includes both classroom lecture and in-water, hands-on training.

Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation @ Day 1: Maine Maritime Academy, Day 2: Fire Training Field, Ellsworth, Maine
Oct 4 – Oct 5 all-day
  • This class is for any applicant with 1 year of sea time within the past 5 years.
  • Day 1 of course is held at Maine Maritime Academy. Day 2 is completed at the fire department followed by the fire training field in Ellsworth, Maine.

This course does not satisfy the requirements for the Basic Training Revalidation components – please see the Basic Training Revalidation course, offered separately, if needed.

USCG Approval:
Course will satisfy the advanced fire-fighting revalidation requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(h) (l) and 11.303(d); and Table A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010 provided he or she has been previously certified per Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010.

Basic Training Revalidation @ Day 1: Maine Maritime Academy's Smith Alexander Gym.
Oct 4 – Oct 5 all-day

The course covers all the competencies of Ocean Survival and Basic Fire Fighting.  This training is open for seafarers who:

  • Have been previously certified in Basic Training
  • Capable of meeting the physical and professional eligibility requirements for STCW certification
  • Have at least entry level mariner documents from USCG or a foreign flag state whose mariner credentialing organization will accept USCG documents, and have one year of sea time in the last five years and need to renew their endorsement for Basic Training.

This course does not satisfy the requirements for the Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation components.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete this course will satisfy the continued competency requirements for Personal Survival Techniques and Basic Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting in STCW section A-VI/1, 46 CFR 11.302(d) (1) and (2) and 46 CFR 12.602 (d)

Engine Room Resource Management, GAP Assessment @ Maine Maritime Academy

A total of 35 hours is required to complete this course:
– 27 hours of online coursework
– An 8 hour final assessment taken on Maine Maritime Academy’s campus

An assessment date can be arranged with the Continuing Education department once the online portion of the course is started.

Before being able to sit for the assessment, the Continuing Education department must verify the successful completion of the online portion of the course.

Engine Room Resource Management is for operational engine license holders. It is a requirement under the STCW-2010 guidelines.

Advanced Polar Code Operations @ Maine Maritime Academy

Pre-requisite: Basic Polar Code Operations

  • 16-hours online coursework
  • 24-hours on campus for classroom, simulator, and final exam. On campus portion is currently scheduled to begin on Friday, October 11, 2019.

This course is a blended learning course consisting of 40-hours curriculum designed to meet the mandatory training requirements in Chapter 12 of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code); and the supporting amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended (STCW) and the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code as required by the Polar Code /STCW 2010.

Basic Polar Code Operations @ Maine Maritime Academy

This USCG approved course meets the STCW mandatory minimum requirements for training and qualification for masters and officers on board ships operating in polar waters.

This course meets the USCG Certification requirements for Basic Polar Code Operations and satisfies the training requirement and standard of competence of Section A-V/4, table A-V/4-1, of the STCW Code as amended for Basic Polar Code Operations.
