Radar Observer Recertification (STCW) 2017 @ Maine Maritime Academy
Oct 19 @ 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Radar Recertification is for all deck license holders who are completing their 5-year license renewal.  Homework packets with radar plotting sheets will be mailed to you prior to the class.  Class takes place with the use of the E-Nav Lab simulators.

Regularly scheduled instruction, is usually on the 3rd Saturday of each month.  One on one private instruction or alternate dates available by advance appointment for $375.00 per student.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete our Radar Observer Recertification course will satisfy the training requirements of 46 CFR 11.480(f) for maintaining the validity of an endorsement for Radar Observer.

Jacksonville-area Alumni Sightseeing Tour

Come join other northeast Florida MMA alum Saturday, October 19, 2019 for a fun dolphin and sightseeing boat tour of St. Augustine. This tour starts at 11:30AM and ends at 1:00PM. Register for this tour on line at by October 11th to assure seating. The cost is $24 plus taxes and fees for adults. Their site  provides information and  directions to the Vilano Beach pier where they pickup and discharge passengers.

Following the boat tour, come enjoy lunch at the Beaches at Vilano, a Caribbean style restaurant located adjacent to the pier. Their web site is

We invite you to join us as Jeff Wright, Director of Alumni Relations; Chris Haley, VP for Institutional Advancement; and Larry Burrill ’77, Co-Chair of Opening Doors, Changing Lives: The Scholarship Campaign for Maine Maritime Academy visit Jersey City, Houston, Seattle, and Portland. These “Up Close” presentations are designed to update alumni on MMA’s current academic offerings and student services, recent facility improvements, and future initiatives. We hope you will join us for one of these dynamic presentations. We begin with a reception at 6 PM followed by the presentation at 7 PM.

Sea Dog Chapter Tour @ Coastal Resources of Maine

On Friday, October 25, join the Sea Dog Chapter for a tour of the new $70 million Coastal Resources of Maine waste-to-energy facility. Located across the street from 92 Harold Bouchard Way on Coldbrook Road in Hampden, this hi-tech facility sorts, recycles, reuses and refines 180,000 tons of municipal trash annually from 115 area municipalities.

Following the tour, muster up at Seasons Restaurant, 427 Main Street in Bangor (Black Bear Room).


Basic First Aid & CPR @ Maine Maritime Academy

Renew your certification for Elementary First Aid and CPR. Course is approved by the ASHI standards.


Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation @ Day 1: Maine Maritime Academy, Day 2: Fire Training Field, Ellsworth, Maine
Nov 1 – Nov 2 all-day
  • This class is for any applicant with 1 year of sea time within the past 5 years.
  • Day 1 of course is held at Maine Maritime Academy. Day 2 is completed at the fire department followed by the fire training field in Ellsworth, Maine.

This course does not satisfy the requirements for the Basic Training Revalidation components – please see the Basic Training Revalidationcourse, offered separately, if needed.

USCG Approval:
Course will satisfy the advanced fire-fighting revalidation requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(h) (l) and 11.303(d); and Table A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010 provided he or she has been previously certified per Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010.

Basic Training Revalidation @ Day 1: Maine Maritime Academy's Smith Alexander Gym.
Nov 1 – Nov 2 all-day

The course covers all the competencies of Ocean Survival and Basic Fire Fighting.  This training is open for seafarers who:

  • Have been previously certified in Basic Training
  • Capable of meeting the physical and professional eligibility requirements for STCW certification
  • Have at least entry-level mariner documents from USCG or a foreign flag state whose mariner credentialing organization will accept USCG documents, and have one year of sea time in the last five years and need to renew their endorsement for Basic Training.

This course does not satisfy the requirements for the Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation components.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete this course will satisfy the continuing competency requirements for Personal Survival Techniques and Basic Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting in STCW section A-VI/1, 46 CFR 11.302(d) (1) and (2) and 46 CFR 12.602 (d)
