STCW – Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR) @ Maine Maritime Academy
Aug 15 @ 8:00 am – 11:30 am

This course covers shipboard management responsibilities, emergencies, safe working practices, fatigue management, health and hygiene, drugs and alcohol, marine environmental issues, and communication and teamwork. There is a written exam to check for theory and understanding of course material. USCG Approval: Applicants who successfully complete our PSSR course will satisfy the Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities training competency requirements of Section A- VI/1 and Table A- VI/1 of the STCW Code, as amended in 2010, and 46 CFR 11.302(a)(4) and 12.602(a)(4).

Vessel Security Officer @ Maine Maritime Academy

This 2-day course is to train vessel personnel with security responsibilities, awareness, and training including emergencies, reporting, audits, threats, and knowledge of the ISPS code.  This course does involve interactive drills outside the classroom.

USCG Approval:

“This course satisfies the training requirements of 33 CFR 104.215(d)(1)(iv) and STCW Code Section A-VI/5 for an STCW endorsement as Vessel Security Officer.”

STCW Personal Survival Techniques (Ocean Survival) @ Maine Maritime Academy

This course is intended for individuals who have never completed Personal Survival Techniques in the past.  This course is conducted in both the classroom and pool.  Course covers the following: emergency situations, evacuation, survival craft, personal life saving equipment, and survival at sea.  There is a written exam for theory and practical assessments are assessed at the Academy’s indoor pool by the instructor.

*Please note, after January 1, 2017 this course (along with Fire Fighting) are only valid for 5 years.  For those who attended these courses in the past, will have to take a Basic Training Refresher or Revalidation course for their 5-year renewals upon expiration in 2016 and after.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete our Personal Survival Techniques course will satisfy the Personal Survival Techniques training competency requirements of STCW Code Section A- VI/1  and 46 CFR 11.302(a)(1) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(1).

Advanced Fire Fighting Refresher @ Maine Maritime Academy

Basic Training Revalidation @ Maine Maritime Academy
Aug 16 @ 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

This course is open to all seafarers who have previously been certified in Basic Training and are capable of meeting the physical and professional eligibility requirements for STCW certification, and have at least entry level mariner documents from USCG or a foreign flag state whose mariner credentialing organization will accept USCG documents, and have one year of sea time in the last five years and need to renew their endorsement for Basic Training.  The course covers all the competencies of Ocean Survival and Basic Fire Fighting.  Please bring an extra set of clothes as you will get wet in the Academy’s indoor pool.  Showers are available for after class.

This course does not satisfy the requirements for the Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation components – please see the Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation course, offered separately, if needed.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete this course will satisfy the continued competency requirements for Personal Survival Techniques and Basic Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting in STCW section A-VI/1, 46 CFR 11.302(d) (1)
and (2) and 46 CFR 12.602 (d)

Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation @ Ellsworth City Hall
Aug 17 @ 7:45 am – 4:30 pm
  • This class is for any applicant who presents evidence of 1 year of sea time within the past 5 years.
  • Course is completed at the fire department followed by the fire training field in Ellsworth, Maine.
  • Participants must be clean shaven in order to meet the NFPA regulations for SCBA’s; mustaches are OK.
  • Bring an extra set of clothes. You may get dirty and there are no showers available.

This course does not satisfy the requirements for the Basic Training Revalidation components – please see the Basic Training Revalidation course, offered separately, if needed.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete our Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation course will satisfy the advanced fire-fighting revalidation requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(h) (l) and 11.303(d); and Table A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010 provided he or she has been previously certified per Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010.

 

MMAAA – Southern California Chapter 39th Annual Lobster Fest @ ZLAC Rowing Club

Alumni and Guests are invited to join the MMA Alumni Association Southern California Chapter for their 39th Annual Lobster Fest. Alumni from other maritime academies are also welcome so feel free to invite other maritime grads!

$40 Lobster Meal – $15 Hot Dog Meal
Meals Include: corn, salad, chips, and soft drinks.

BYOB- Bring Your Own Bib! Also beer and wine are welcome. (Swimsuits are optional.)

Radar Observer Recertification (STCW) 2017 @ Maine Maritime Academy
Aug 18 @ 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

Radar Recertification is for all deck license holders who are completing their 5-year license renewal.  Homework packets with radar plotting sheets will be mailed to you prior to the class.  Class takes place with the use of the E-Nav Lab simulators.

Regularly scheduled instruction, is usually on the 3rd Saturday of each month.  One on one private instruction or alternate dates available by advance appointment for $375.00 per student.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete our Radar Observer Recertification course will satisfy the training requirements of 46 CFR 11.480(f) for maintaining the validity of an endorsement for Radar Observer.
