This course consists of 35 total hours:
– 27 hours of online coursework
–  8 hour final assessment taken on Maine Maritime’s campus

An assessment date can be arranged with the Continuing Education department once the online portion of the course is started.

Before being able to sit for the assessment, course completion must be verified by the Continuing Education department.

Leadership & Managerial Skills is for both deck and engine license holders who are upgrading to management level. Team working skills is also incorporated into this course, so operational level licensees can take this course and cover the components for both operational and managerial skills.

–  An 8 hour final assessment taken on Maine Maritime Academy’s campus

Before being able to sit for the assessment, the Continuing Education department must verify the successful completion of the online portion of the course.

Engine Room Resource Management is for operational engine license holders. It is a requirement under the STCW-2010 guidelines.

The Change of Command Ceremony is both the symbolic and physical transfer of leadership responsibilities from the graduating class to the Second Class who will assume their new roles in preparation for the Summer Training Cruise and their senior year.

MMA Alumni Ski Day @ Black Mountain Ski Resort

Please join us for the 6th annual Maine Maritime Academy Alumni Winter Gathering at Black Mountain Ski Resort ( in Rumford, Maine on Saturday, February 29. MMA students on spring break are welcome and encouraged to join us, enjoy the camaraderie, network with alumni and discover the many diverse career paths that their MMA education can take them on.

Come for any or all of the day. Enjoy catching up with fellow Alumni. Black Mountain offers a $25 all-day adult lift ticket that day and has night skiing (5 to 9pm). It is the 4th highest vertical drop ski area in Maine yet has easy trails from the top. With great snow this year you will enjoy some of the finest glade skiing around. There are 17 kilometers of some of the best cross-country trails in North America. Snow shoeing is allowed on the cross-country trails. Equipment rentals are available at the on mountain ski shop. Black Mountain has downhill & cross country skis and snowshoes available for rent.

All are welcome to join us for an après ski social gathering with live entertainment from 3:00 to 5:30 pm in the upstairs bar and lounge. Spouses and guests are welcome! Networking opportunity for MMA students with MMA Alumni with diverse careers in going to sea on merchant vessels, tugs, offshore rigs, ship building, large power plants, the paper industry, military, ski industry, construction, safety and owning and operating successful businesses in Maine.

Qualified Assessor Online @ Maine Maritime academy

Maine Maritime Academy’s Qualified Assessor course is 100% online.

All assessments must be signed by a qualified assessor approved by the Coast Guard in accordance with 46 CFR 10.405.

This course provides the already qualified seafarer instruction and training in assessment techniques of competency, as well as appropriate guidance in assessment methods and practices. Each participant successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Apply the international and national requirements concerning the training and assessment of officers and ratings on merchant vessels/platforms.
  • Determine and verify effective assessment procedures and methods.
  • Organize and administer, i.e. conduct, assessments to those requiring such.

This USCG approved course meets the training requirements of 46 CFR 10.405(a)(1) and 46 CFR 10.405(d) as well as STCW Code Section A-I/6 paragraphs 3 and 6. This course meets the requirements of the Qualified Assessor fundamentals as outlined as a requirement in USCG NVIC 19-14.
