Mariana Alvarez Restrepo `13

It only takes a small seed of an idea, left undisturbed to
germinate and grow, that can blossom into a life's plan. Such
a seed was planted when Mariana Alvarez Restrepo '13 was
a young girl of seven on a whale watch trip with her family
in her native Colombia. A mother humpback whale and
her calf surfaced just five feet from their vessel and Mari
was enchanted. She determined to make marine mammal
conservation her life's work.
Mari was born in Cartago, Valle del Cauca, Colombia
and moved with her family to Orlando, FL when she was
nine years old. She graduated from Cypress Creek High
School with an International Baccalaureate diploma; an IB
degree granted her the opportunity to attend any college
or university in the world. While Mari initially looked at
schools in south Florida, she chose to attend Maine Maritime
Academy because of the personal nature of the
