Re-Powering Tug Pentagoet
– Campaign Completed –
It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that we write to ask for your support to complete an important project for the Tug Pentagoet. Under the United States Department of Environmental Protection Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant program, the Tug Pentagoet was one of two Maine projects selected to receive a matching grant. To be sure that the Pentagoet is re-powered and ready for students for the fall 2015 semester, we must raise $250,000 by August to take advantage of this opportunity, and we need your help.
Your support will help to complete this much needed re-power and ensure that the Pentagoet is upgraded to the most efficient, cost effective engines available. The Pentagoet is critical to Maine Maritime Academy’s training in vessel operations and maintenance and is the crown jewel of the small vessel fleet at Maine Maritime Academy. The re-power will ensure that she remains active in the training program for years to come.
Your investment, along with the 50% matching grant from the Department of Environmental Protection, will provide a 20-30 year life extension to the Pentagoet and bring it into Tier 3 compliance ahead of federal requirements. This project will replace the two original 16 V-92 series main engines and original generators on the Pentagoet with modern Caterpillar C18 ACERT 6 cylinder main engines and C2.2 – 4 cylinder generator sets.
We have chosen to make the switch to cleaner burning engines years before a regulatory directive as an example of our commitment to emerging technologies and environmental stewardship. Our students will leave MMA having experienced the real-world applications of environmentally friendly technology and understanding their role as advocates for the adoption of these technologies in industry. We view the re-powering of the Pentagoet as a valuable demonstration project for our students and our state.
Please join us in re-powering the Pentagoet; your support will directly impact the students at Maine Maritime Academy.
Thank you in advance for your support,
