What has been your favorite class at MMA?
SCUBA diving. I love being in the water; there is a whole other world underneath. Currently, I have my basic diving certification, but I am planning to fast track this year and get my masters after the Bonaire trip over spring break.
What do you love about the MMA community?
I’m from a very small town, much like Castine. So, Castine reminds me of home. I enjoy the smallness and the welcoming community members. I have two wonderful host moms, Kay Hightower and Beverly Bishop, that really embody what Castine is all about. They have taken me into their homes over the past two years and we have grown very close.
What are your hopes for the future?
I would love to be doing research work on a boat and, especially aspire to get a job with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). I would like to be on one of their research vessels doing research and/or perhaps being involved as a scientific diver.
Why did you pick MMA?
As soon as I walked onto campus I knew MMA was the school for me. I liked the size and how welcoming the people were. The determining factor was that MMA offers the dual major of Bio and SVO, which is extremely unique and beneficial. It was also a bonus that I would be able to participate in the volleyball and softball programs.
What would you say to a prospective MMA student?
I would tell them that MMA is a very unique school that offers many hands-on opportunities. As a marine biology/SVO major, it was important to me that I spend a lot of time out on the water. On my third day of classes, as a freshman, I was already out on a boat! I would also tell them that if they’re looking to be a name and not a number, MMA is a good place for them. The professors as well as the other staff at MMA truly want students to succeed and are willing to put in the extra time to help students. Our job placement rate and the quality of jobs that our alumni have speak for themselves.
