Underway to the north

Posted on: August 3, 2016

Dear Friends,

After finishing up last-minute preparations involving tuning the mast rigging and doing drills with the sails, we are underway to the north! Unsure as of yet how the weather will be as we make our voyage, we are off the coast with our offshore safety lines put up in hopes for some good wind.

Yesterday we were fortunate to have a place at the dock for the crew to get a shower before our 3 day stretch across open water, while last night we anchored out in the bay of Rockland. Finishing up this morning, we set sail and broke out into our watches, but not before pulling out the sextants! Our first look up at the sun provided us with many measurements of the local apparent noon, which we decided was at 1242.

Also, on our way out we passed the home of Dr. Ed Morris, whom in the 1980’s worked to save Bowdoin and restore her, after he had grown to love her as crew under Capt. MacMillan. Now 98, he was sure to put his Bowdoin hat on during Capt. Jergenson’s visit, and had his cannon fired off while we passed by. After firing our own and blowing the horn, we all enjoyed the very special send off.
