Well, here we go,off on our first of three trips to Nova Scotia this summer. This trip has already been a particularly good (and busy) one, starting off with a visit to Portland for the Tall Ships festival! This was the first time in 15 years that Portland has hosted the Tall Ships, and as Maine’s Official Tall Ship we had the privilege of being the first in the parade.

In addition to our students on course, we hosted the winners of our campaign donation challenge, as well as a group of students from Sail Maine as we sailed in past Portland Head Light all the way to the Maine State Pier, where we fired a final salute with the cannon before exiting the parade; to the shock of a few parade-goers! We spent the night last night anchored up in Chandler Cove by Chebeague Island to wait for some thunderstorms to pass, and slipped out in the fog just a little after dawn.

Now we’re underway in earnest and the students are in full course mode. Unfortunatel,y we had a fog bank roll in for a half hour right at LAN, so they’re going to have to keep on practicing sun lines on their sextants and hope for a clear horizon at noon tomorrow!
