Joseph W. Emerson ’44

Joseph. W. Emerson, Sr., 92, of Loon Cove Lane, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2016. He was born in Island Falls on June 25, 1924, the son of Raymond L. and Doris (Pride) Emerson.

He attended Maine Maritime Academy then served his country during WW II as a Merchant Marine. After the war he married his childhood sweetheart Ruth (Lewin) Emerson in 1946. He settled in Augusta with his family and went to work at Cony High school and then worked for the State of Maine as a boiler and elevator inspector for 25 years. He continued working as an engineer and boiler inspector into his 80’s. He moved to Winthrop in 1972 and remained “on the lake” for the rest of his life. He passed on his passion for hunting, fishing, and woodworking to his children and grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Ruth L. Emerson on Sept. 9, 2015. He is survived by two sons, Joseph Emerson Jr. and his wife Valerie of Winthrop, and Robert A. Emerson of Winthrop, and daughter Nancy Lund and her husband Geoff of Omro, Wis.; grandchildren Jacob, Jeremy, Andrew, Kate, Laura, Ashley, and Logan and their families; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m.. on Saturday, Oct. 29th at the Winthrop Congregational Church with a brief reception to follow. Burial will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery, Winthrop.
