John L. Dorr ’71

John LeRoy Dorr, 68, of Boothbay, Maine lost his courageous battle with cancer on Sept. 22 at Mid Coast Hospital. He was the son of the late Earl W. Dorr Jr. and Sally F. Hamilton.

John retired in January and was able to fulfill his dream of returning to his home in Maine after more than 30 years serving the U.S. government. Following his graduation from Maine Maritime Academy, John served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and ultimately worked for the Department of Navy, most recently in the Military Sealift Command in Washington, D.C.

John is survived by his mother of Brunswick and Pemaquid; sons, Warren Dorr, and Nathan Dorr; grandson, “JR” Dorr, all of Alexandria, Va.; sisters, Sandra Turnbull and husband Andrew, and Terry McCabe and husband Lee, all of Pemaquid; brother, David Hamilton and wife Karen of Cedar Park, Tex.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and former wife, Perle.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Topsham.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 12 at the New Harbor Cemetery.
