Christopher N. Gridley ’13

Christopher Norton Gridley passed away unexpectedly on December 31, 2016 at his home in West Tremont. He had recently turned 26 years old.

Christopher (Chris to all his friends) attended Connors Emerson School in Bar Harbor, graduated from Mount Desert Island High School, Class of 2009, and obtained his B.S. in Marine Engineering Operations from Maine Maritime Academy in 2013. He went to work for McDermott International on the Derrick Barge 50, rising to Second Assistant Engineer. While usually working in the Gulf of Mexico, Christopher was also able to travel to Trinidad and Tobago and to Brazil for work. In his earlier years, and occasionally while he was home from the DB50, he would lobster. He loved being at sea, working hard, being with his friends and coworkers, and doing projects in his workshop.

Christopher’s smile and laugh would light up a room, and he gave the best hugs. He was a friend to everyone he met, whether old acquaintance or someone brand new. He was truly loved by all. Alexa and his dog Cabela had special places in Christopher’s heart. Those three were best buddies, playing in his yard, riding ATV’s, or making S’mores in the fire pit.

He is survived by his mother, Christine Norton, his father, Tom Gridley, both of Bar Harbor and South Portland, and his brother Jonathan Gridley and his wife Colleen, of Freeport. Christopher was predeceased by Nana Norton, Grandpa Gridley, and Aunt Pat, who all loved him so much. He will be missed greatly by Uncle Guy, Aunt Karen and Uncle Garry, Aunt Martha and Uncle Jim, Aunt Mary and Uncle Charlie, Aunt Patty and Uncle Jim, and his many cousins, especially his buddy Elijah.

A celebration of Christopher’s life will be held Saturday, January 7 from 1-4 pm at Maine Seacoast Mission (127 West Street, Bar Harbor).

Anyone wishing to make a charitable donation in Christopher’s memory may do so to Maine Maritime Academy, the MDI YMCA, or Kid’s Corner childcare center.
