STATEMENT OF THE JOB

Employee manages and coordinates the various counseling and substance abuse programs of the college. These duties include, but are not limited to, assessment, referral, counseling and education. Employee also serves as an ombudsman to students. Although rooted in Medical Services, this position reports directly to the Dean of Student Services. May provide budget and report preparation.

DUTIES OF THE JOB

1.      Coordinates substance abuse and other health and wellness prevention programming with faculty, and the offices of Student Services, Student Activities, Residential Life, Commandant of Midshipmen, Athletics, Security, and Student Health Services.

2.      Provides substance abuse and general counseling services to students on a short to medium term basis and refers students for long term counseling as needed.

3.      Implements peer resource programs and develops resource groups (AA, NA, Grief & Loss, etc) as needed.

4.      Provides and supports outreach to and from the local communities, with local service providers, and other colleges and schools in Maine.

5.      Designs and delivers substance abuse educational programs to students. This may include curriculum development and classroom teaching.

6.      Assists the Commandants Division and Student Services in assessing the campus substance abuse norms and provides strategies to alter them as appropriate.

7.      Sets goals for and evaluates the effectiveness of outside counseling for students wishing to return to MMA after dismissal that requires counseling.

8.      In the role of ombudsman serves as an advocate for students by helping them develop strategies for solving problems related to their collegiate experience.

9.      Oversees the college's compliance with the federal DrugFreeSchools and Community Act 10.

10.   Maintain appropriate LCPC or LCSW license.

11.  Administers appropriate department budget.

12.  Participates in the Random Drug Testing program.

13.  May supervise student and/or regular Academy employees.
