This USCG/STCW approved course of 4.5 day 36 contact hours plus 4 hours of homework is is based on IMO Model Course #1.27 and designed to fulfill the STCW Training requirements for the use of ECDIS at both the operational and management level as revised by the 2010 Manila Amendments, specifically as these apply to Tables A-II/1, A-II/2 and A-II/3. The course fee listed here applies to STCW USCG approved certification in the use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) as either a secondary navigation aid or as the primary means of navigation. The course instructor is also a TRANSAS approved type specific ECDIS instructor so students may request a separate TRANSAS issued, Type Specific ECDIS certificate for an additional $200. ALL students entering the course should hold a USCG merchant marine deck license, have completed formal training in Terrestrial Navigation and the use of Radar/ARPA for safe navigation and collision avoidance. Additionally, they shall have a thorough familiarity with visual navigation, completed a period of supervised bridge watch-keeping duties and be fluent in the use of personal computer systems. The course will be taught by qualified (Transas Train the Trainer ECDIS) MMA faculty members and Continuing Education instructors who hold current unlimited USCG master licenses. The course will allow for the practice and demonstration of the required functions of ECDIS as the primary means of navigation in undertaking the duties of the Officer In Charge of a Navigation Watch (OINCW), to include knowledge, understanding and proficiency in: Capability and limitations of ECDIS, Operation, interpretation, and analysis of information obtained from ECDIS and Management of operational procedures, system files and data. Upon successful completion of the course students will receive a Certificate from Maine Maritime Academy Continuing Education stating the student has “successfully completed training in the Electronic Chart Information Systems And has satisfied the requirement to demonstrate competence in the Use of ECDIS to maintain the safety of navigation of Table A-II/1 of the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code; As Amended; AND be considered to have successfully demonstrated the competence to Maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making of Table A II/2 of the STCW Code as Amended.”
