Voters Approve $4.5 Million Bond to Help Build First New Academic Facility in 30 Years at Maine Maritime Academy

CASTINE, Maine—Maine Maritime Academy will receive $4.5 million in state funding approved in yesterday’s state-wide referendum to help build the new ABS Center for Engineering, Science and Research. The building will feature interactive teaching facilities and specialized laboratories for training and for industry-relevant research.  Modern classrooms and research spaces will enhance the college’s applied research program and strengthen the Academy’s reputation as a world-wide marine engineering center of excellence.

“We are thrilled that the people of the State of Maine have come out to support Maine Maritime Academy by approving funding for the new ABS Center,” said Dr. William J. Brennan, President of the Academy. “We want to thank our alumni, friends and supporters who rallied for Question 4, and all who came out to vote in support of this bond.”

The public funds that were approved by voters will combine with $7 million in funds the Academy has already raised to build the new facility, which is the first academic building to be constructed on the campus in 30 years.

Maine Maritime Academy is a co-educational, public college on the coast of Maine offering 18 degree programs in engineering, management, science and transportation. For more information, visit
