CASTINE, Maine – (Reprinted from CHS release) With its public exhibit season extended through October 15 this year, the Castine Historical Society is pleased to announce that Maine Maritime Academy students will be serving as exhibit docents on weekends throughout the fall.
CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) President William Brennan has announced that the college will host its third annual all-campus convocation immediately following the start of the college’s 71st academic year. The ceremony was introduced in 2010 with the intent of establishing a new tradition at the college to welcome all new students, as well as returning upperclassmen, in a formal ceremony that marks the beginning of the college experience, with the same level of optimism, enthusiasm, and celebration as commencement exercises. The convocation is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, Sep 5, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., in the Alexander Fieldhouse. Members of the Castine community are invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony.
CASTINE, Maine - No, Cater-Trax is not something you’ll find under a log in Witherle Woods. Rather, it is a new online ordering process for all food, beverage, and special event requests here at the Academy.
Public tours of the Training Ship State of Maine have been suspended temporarily. While the website does mention that State of Maine ship tours are available, we will not be doing any ship tours until after Sept 3rd (at least). More information will be posted when tour availabilities are determined.
CASTINE, Maine – On Tuesday, August 28 at 3:00pm, the Castine Historical Society will sponsor an illustrated presentation in the Mitchell Room of the Society’s Abbott School building titled, “Mapmaker, Mapmaker, Make Me a Map: Women and Map Making in World War II”. The presenter will be Maine Maritime Academy faculty member Betsy Reese, an adjunct professor of geography at the college and co-curator of the joint CHS-MMA seasonal exhibit, “Schooner Bowdoin on the Greenland Patrol”.
CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy is sponsoring a three-day training session beginning Sunday for Maine’s Career and Technical Education Teachers. The theme of this session is Alignment of Mathematics and Science with Career and Technical Education. The MMA Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) faculty will present five sessions over the three day period.
CASTINE, Maine – Last week, Bangor Savings Bank in Castine made one of its most important investments to date—an investment in the Maine Maritime Academy, and ultimately the state of Maine. Michele Mann, Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager of Bangor Savings Bank’s Castine location, presented a check for $5,000 to Maine Maritime Academy President, William Brennan, Friday morning at Leavitt Hall.
CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy mourns the passing of Richard “Dick” Ericson. “We are shocked and saddened by news of the recent death of Dick Ericson,” said President Bill Brennan. “Dick has served Maine Maritime Academy faithfully for over 23 years. His loss to our school and community will be felt deeply by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this time of great tragedy.”
CASTINE, Maine – One of the few days when Maine Maritime Academy’s Schooner Bowdoin is at her home berth this summer has been set aside for a special Open House—or, rather “Open Boat.” On Friday, July 27, the Castine Historical Society (CHS) will extend its seasonal exhibit, “Schooner Bowdoin on the Greenland Patrol,” to the Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) waterfront, when the Bowdoin will be open to the public for tours from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The Schooner’s captain and crew, MMA faculty and others involved in developing the joint CHS-MMA exhibit about the vessel’s extraordinary World War II service will be on hand to answer questions.
