CASTINE - Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) alumni from throughout the United States will return to the college Sept. 23-25 for annual Homecoming festivities. Paul Mercer, director of alumni affairs, said this year's Homecoming gathering welcomes all returning alumni and will honor the reunion classes of 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2006.
Alumni will begin to arrive on campus on Friday afternoon, with registration taking place from 11:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. in the lobby of the college's Harold Alfond Student Center. The annual meeting of the MMA Alumni Association is scheduled to be held at 4 p.m. in the Wyman House. An alumni and friends open house will take place in the Wyman House from 5:30 - 8 p.m. Alumni and friends will join together at a welcome reception scheduled for 6 p.m.
On Saturday, guest registration will be held from 8:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. in the Harold Alfond Student Center. The morning schedule will begin with a special "Eight Bells" Memorial Service honoring deceased members of the Class of 1961. The ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. on the lawn in front of Leavitt Hall. Other events will include campus highlights tours, waterfront and harbor tours, and tours of the training ship, State of Maine. A special program entitled MMA Today, presented by Capt. Jeff Loustaunau, vice president for enrollment management and commandant of midshipmen, will highlight recent developments at the college and feature new teaching technology and laboratories. The presentation will be held at 9 a.m. in the 1954 Lecture Hall, located on the lower level of the Harold Alfond Student Center.
The Eighth Annual William J. Mottola Mariner Athletics Hall of Fame Induction, recognizing athletes, coaches, and administrators for their accomplishments and contributions to the college's athletic programs, will be held at 10 a.m. in the Delano Auditorium located in Leavitt Hall. The college will honor three Maine Maritime alumni, Ernold "Ernie" Goodwin ('61), Fred Gleason ('64), and W. Kent Higgins ('66). In addition to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a new multi-purpose room housing the Hall of Fame will be unveiled and dedicated to the Class of 1986 at 4:30 p.m. The Class of 1986 Room is located in the lower level of Smith Gymnasium. The public is invited to attend both ceremonies.
Kickoff of the football game vs. Fitchburg State University is set for 1 p.m., following the traditional march-on by reunion classes and a welcome by Dr. William J. Brennan, president of MMA, beginning at 12:25 p.m. Brennan and Loustaunau will also present an award to this year's honor company for academic excellence, extracurricular achievement, and community service. The MMA Alumni Association and several Alumni Chapters will present scholarships to MMA students. The Regiment of Midshipmen will then pass in review. An evening banquet will conclude Homecoming festivities.
Other weekend athletic events taking place on campus will include a women's volleyball game with the University of Maine - Fort Kent on Friday in Smith Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The men's and women's soccer teams will take on Husson University on Sunday afternoon, at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, on Richie Field. All regular season athletic events at MMA are free and open to the public.
