In addition to academic courses, ROTC candidates wear uniforms once a week during military labs, drills, military science presentations, and other practical training activities. ROTC summer programs offer a taste of military lifesuch as midshipmen cruises in Naval ROTCand round out a candidates military training.
Naval and Marine Corps officers are commissioned from Maine Maritime Academy in two categories:
Following graduation from MMA and an active duty commission through MMA's NROTC unit, new ensigns (USN) and second lieutenants (USMC) continue on to assignments in Naval Aviation, Surface Warfare, Submarine Warfare, or Special Forces.
The Merchant Marine Reserve program is designed to ensure the United States has a sufficient merchant marine to serve as naval support in time of a national emergency. The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is presently funding a Student Incentive Payment (SIP) of $8,000 annually to offset school costs.
NOTE: These funds are considered income and are expected to be used for educational purposes. Financial aid awards may need to be revised after a student accepts the MMR agreement.
At this time, ROTC is not being offered by the Coast Guard but you can earn a USCG commission from MMA through the Maritime Academy Graduate Program (MARGRAD). Contact MMA's Navy ROTC Office for further information.
