CASTINE, Maine— Dr. William J. Brennan, President of Maine Maritime Academy, today announced that the college will host its 7th annual Convocation on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Alexander Field House. Members of the Castine community are invited and encouraged to attend.

“The whole community comes together at Convocation to welcome our new students,” said Dr. Brennan. “It’s an opportunity for our faculty, staff, and friends to affirm their support, and we invite members of the Castine community to join the gathering as a reminder that they truly make an impact on our students.”

All members of the MMA staff and faculty participate in a unified procession. Campus and community leaders, including Board of Trustees Chair, Robert Somerville; Castine Board of Selectman Chairman, Peter Vogell; and Alumni Association President, Jim Proulx, will speak at the ceremony and offer their welcome.

The Convocation ceremony was introduced in 2010, establishing a new tradition to welcome all incoming students, as well as second-, third-, and fourth-year students, in a formal ceremony that marks the beginning of the college experience with the same enthusiasm and celebration as commencement exercises.

Maine Maritime Academy is a co-educational, public college on the coast of Maine offering 22 programs of study in engineering, management, science and transportation. The college’s persistence, retention and graduation rates are well above national averages and job placement for MMA graduates exceeds 90 percent within 90 days of graduation. In 2014 and 2015, MONEY magazine ranked Maine Maritime Academy the #1 public college in America on their Best Colleges List. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of Maine Maritime Academy in 1941. For more information, visit mainemaritime.edu.
